I think Collapsing Cities and Tiger Tones are overated quite a bit, I have never seen Collapsing Cities live but I just think that they are quite average by their recordings. Most people that know me know my opinions about Tiger Tones, I really want to like them I just have never really enjoyed listening to their music apart from the original recording of Be Your Star.
Black Market Art when they were around where hugely underated. It was a crime that they didnt get more appreciation than they got.
I also think a lot of Auckland Bands get a lot more attention than they deserve. Quite often they arent as good as other bands from other parts of the country but because the music media is in Auckland they write about bands in Auckland.

Stomps or Stumps? There's an amazing Welly band called the Stumps who are underrated too.
The Stomps. But the stumps are pretty amazing too. Also the Enright House on their last tour (well the one with I.Ryoko) The gig in Auckland was seriously under attended and they are amazing. Also, a lot of the musicians /sound artist in the experimental scene are waaaaaay underappreciated. Like Nigel Wright, Adam Willets, Sweetcakes. Also bands like The Ribbon and Stress Cadet. I think one of the reasons Moron Says What get so many shows is that they are the "electronic act" that people (promotors) immediately think of for opening. I mean there are other oresum acts out there, but half of being a musician/band is the promotion and a lot of kiwi bands (maybe by nature) don't push it a lot.

his solo thing is rad. it bridges the gap between pop/obvious tunes with words and more experimental noise buzz which should bring waaay more people to his shows.....who knew what happened that night?? there were alot of other things on competing for attention... but local support always helps. a lot of his songs are really raw and honest, some too much for my liking, well one song in particular, its like you've overheard a private argument a couple is having, just akward and you'd rather not listen. but some might like to be perverted in that way. but generally i really like his solo stuff. intense and melodramatic, just the way I like it!

Overated: Little Pictures: Although they did get that 2 star review in Groove Guide. Hit the nail on the head and pinned the tail on the donkey. Their music is way too cheese ball.
The band that defines overrated in NZ, has to be The Naked And Famous. Sure their recordings are ok, but man they suck live.

Naked and Famous would be heaps better if they were left to play support shows and develop as a live act. All the hype surrounding them created by their label and management, makes it hard for them to live up too. They seem to fall flat on stage and shine on record.
I've heard them a bit on Active when we have it on at work. They are ok recorded, but when I saw them live I was really impressed. I found their songs a bit bland (not that bad though), but their performance was really good. They were pretty damn tight and in my opinion they were really good at what they do, which is more than I can say about of a lot of NZ bands I've seen recently...
